Hello children of the '70s and those interested in that fab decade! "Stuck in the '70s" gets so many questions about the history of the decade, we can't possibly answer them all. Our site is meant to be strictly fun and entertainment. If you want all the gory details about Watergate or Vietnam, there's someplace better on the Web to find it. However, we will run requests as I get to them (not likely to be in time for your report deadline). If you can help these people out, please respond directly to the e-mail addresses listed and send a carbon copy (CC:) to stuckinthe70s@yahoo.com. We'll print your answers right here as we get 'em! Thanks, man!

For those of you with a history report on the '70s due, here's an excellent resource (and not limited to the '70s): www.go.hrw.com. Use the keywords:

Here's an interesting e-mail from Carolyn Nelson

Subject: Time Capsule
My students in 1976 built a time capsule to be opened in 25 years which is next year. They were in 7th grade and now are in their late 30's.
We put a lot of interesting stuff in it and hope those things are in good enough condition so the 2001 7th graders can learn about life in the '70s.
I just found this site which will help me refresh memories about that time.
Thanks for your site!

Joel Bader suggests learning about Airlines of the '70s:
Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2000
From: Joel Bader 103171.1652@compuserve.com
Subject: 70s Airlines (especially Braniff)
Some time ago I contacted you about doing a tribute to the airlines that were in business during the 1970s--the old Frontier Airlines, the old Ozark Airlines, Piedmont, the old National Airlines and especially Braniff International. If you're still interested in doing something on the airlines of the 1970s, I thought you might be interested in knowing about two new web sites that pay tribute to Braniff International---www.braniffinternational.org and
www.braniffinternational.com. Both of them focus on the Flying Colors period of Braniff (from 1965 to 1982), although www.braniffinternational.org is more developed at the time of this message.
Both have links, photos and guest books. Please let me know what you think.

David Silva helps students with some of what he remembers about life in the '70s:

The economy in the 70s was awful. To the point that double digit interest rates and rising prices were largely responsible for Reagan getting elected in 1980.
Long gas lines, during both the Nixon and Carter administrations were typical, and during the '70s, fuel prices went from under 30 cents a gallon in 1970 to over a dollar a gallon in 1980. At one point, gas stations tried selling gas by the liter. Reason being, a liter being only about one-quarter gallon, they could raise the prices four times as fast, and (so the thinking went) people still use to seeing the price per gallon posted would think that 15 cents a liter looked less expensive than 60 cents a gallon.
In the mid 70s, while Microsoft was still years away from being created, Exxon was the most powerful company in the world and King Faisal (spelled wrong I suspect) who controlled OPEC was Time Magazine's Man Of The Year.
One thing you MUST include in your report is this footnote. When Gerald Ford tried to turn around the economy, one of his bigger ideas was to go on TV and offer Americans buttons which read "WIN", meaning "Whip Inflation Now". I am not sure what the thought process was that inspired this idea, or what it was supposed to accomplish, but lots of people wore those buttons and prices kept raising faster then incomes.

The "Midnight Man" as he calls himself remembers leisure time and religion from the '70s:

Having spent the 70s reading science fiction, I sort of missed it. However, a good friend of mine had two experiences that might help your research.
In high school, he was good natured and intelligent, but extremely self-absorbed. He used to read every issue of "Psychology Today," and studied gestalt theories. He spent a great deal of time worrying about how he was relating with the rest of us. This pathological introspection combined with a disastrous first relationship created an enormous burden of insecurity and repressed guilt.
To alleviate his misery, my friend attended a revival meeting conducted by a long-haired, ruffle shirted, bejeweled minister, whose former occupation involved running a three card monte game on Bourbon Street. The result was predictable and inevitable: hearing the minister's impassioned pleas to forsake sin, shouted in rhythm to Jesus Christ Superstar played on a Hammond Organ, my friend's pent-up emotions erupted. He wept, fell to his knees, and proclaimed his new-found faith.
For the next several weeks, my friend wore a large wooden cross, hung out with the Jesus people, and always had a copy of the Good News bible. Still good- natured, his conversations always centered on his conversion, and his new sense of well being. The coming of summer, with its sunny beaches and a new relationship, took the edge off his dogmatic devotion.
Unfortunately, his new found appreciation of hedonism somehow became entangled with his spirituality: he and his girlfriend took up with a commune of Californians who followed the teachings of a free love guru from India.
Hope this helps!
PS My friend and his girlfriend are still together, but the guru died (or as my friend says, traveled to a different level of existence).

In the 70's we experienced 12% inflation, 12% unemployment. Car loans averaged 22%. Do you remember when gas stations were only open a few hours a day to conserve gas? And people waited in long lines to get a restricted amount of gas? Good luck!
